the frankincense

Good since the beginning of human history

Frankincense was used by the Ancient Egyptians in their religious rites. It was part of the sanctuary incense used by the Jews and is frequently mentioned in the Pentateuch. In the Christian tradition, Frankincense is one of the three gifts offered by the Magi to the baby Jesus . Pliny the Elder describes the characteristics of good quality Frankincense as an antidote against poisoning caused by hemlock. Iranian physicist Avicenna recommends it for a variety of diseases. In China and Asia in general it was used as internal and external medicine.

The Ancient Egyptians used Frankincense for mummification

How frankincense is obtained

The resins are hand-picked from engravings made in the bark of the Boswellia tree

The resins are cleaned by hand of impurities

The final product consists of translucent and fragrant "tears" of different sizes

how essential oil is produced

The resins are distilled in Italy with hot steam currents to obtain the essential oil and hydrolat.

Powerful empires have flourished from the Frankincense trade. The main route started from the port of Dhofar (now Oman) to the port of Qana (now Oman), then following a land route to Northern Arabia from where it was transported by ship to Europe.
